About me.
Always intrigued by how things were made and what made things tick, shaping surfboards was really a natural progression for me. Surfing only became a part of my life when my family moved to Cornwall in twenty sixteen, in order for my father to pursue his career as a landscape artist. Spending most of my college years surfing, and dodging lectures to surf and make boards, I slowly developed an appreciation for the art. In a small shed with my planer I began to hack away at some foam, and somehow managed to piece together myself a fish.
Heavily influenced by a handful of surfers that shaped, I began on this journey as a board builder. Soon figuring out the only way for me to do more of this, was to work for myself, giving me that freedom I needed to surf more.
Originally, I was shaping for fun and coming up with designs I felt I couldn’t get elsewhere, using my hands to make boards for less than I could buy them for in a shop. within a year or so of doing this and with more orders coming in than expected from friends and friends of friends, I decided to knock down my old space and build a bigger one. A brand new workshop with a shaping bay and a glassing bay next door. Everything I could possibly need.
I have always aspired to people who made a living out of doing what they love, from a young age this was always my goal. I guess you could say this was ingrained in me having an artist as a dad.
Handshaping and glassing from start to finish has been quite a learning curve, a journey of triumph and failure. But being open minded to all types of surfboard design, from longboards to shortboards and everything in between I’ve slowly begun to understand what makes certain boards work better than others. Constantly intrigued by designs and new feelings, I was hooked on shaping pretty early on.
I truly enjoy handshaping surfboards, it drives me out of bed in the morning. It’s helped take me to new places and given me new experiences that I would never thought I would’ve had. Grateful for the relationships I have made with customers and seeing the joy a surfboard brings to them, I can’t see why I won't do this for as long as I can…
